Compact Track Loader or Skid Steer Loader?

Two of the most popular pieces of equipment you will see on just about any job site is the Bobcat skid-steer loader and compact track loader. The skid steer is not only quick, but can turn on a dime and can operate in especially tight spaces. The famous skid-steer is also lighter than a track loader which makes it easier to transport. This could lead to a long term advantage when discussing time and money saved.   You can expect the skid-steer loader to be powerful and productive enough to deserve a spot in your fleet. If you are in the landscaping line of business or a general builder, you will want one at least one of these in your fleet.

Location of the typical job site could play a pivotal role in your decision making. The skid steers are great on harder surfaces such as concrete and asphalt. However, the track loader may be able to operate just fine on these surfaces, the tougher ground will accelerate the wear of the track. If you are operating on a rocky condition, this could lead to damaging the track or cutting it by the sharp materials.

Once you jump into a compact track loader, the skid-steer flaws start to become noticeable. Track loaders are typically more comfortable for the operator. Track loaders feature smooth, operator friendly operations and is a bit more of a forgiving ride than the skid steer. Also, the track itself will provide less disruption to softer surfaces (grass, dirt), reducing the site clean-up time.

Here is a listed breakdown of some pros/cons of a compact track loader and skid-steer.

Compact Track Loader (Track)

Pros:

  • Grade just about anywhere
  • When working in dirt you have a huge advantage
  • Will not compact the ground
  • You can bulldoze and grade efficiently

Cons:

  • If you slice or snag the track you have to replace the whole side
  • You should not use while plowing snow
  • Should not use when performing demolition work
  • If you need to replace it can be very costly

Skid Steer (Wheels)

Pros:

  • Big advantages when working on hard surfaces such as streets and curbs
  • Replacement of tires is way cheaper than replacing tracks
  • Will compact ground

Cons:

  • If you are grading the yard and planning to grow something, you might compact the ground
  • Skid steers tires will skid. This means you are going to put wear on the tires quicker than a track.

At the end of the day, there will be advantages and disadvantages to both the skid steer and compact track loader. It comes down to what works better for the operator and what works better for the company. You may even be inclined to have both in your fleet to attack any job site out there!
