Winter Weather Safety Tips
Can you believe it is already the end of January? It really is crazy how fast time can fly, and before we know, it will be June. Let's not get ahead of ourselves quite yet, we still have a few more weeks of winter to get through first. Best Line's top priority is safety for its employees and the people around them. With that in mind, we thought we would share some winter weather safety tips to keep in mind on the homestretch to spring!
On the job site...
- Layers, layers, layers. Make sure that you are properly dressed for being in the anticipated weather. It may be necessary to carry a change of clothes to ensure you have something dry to put on if you get wet from weather or from working with equipment such as pumps.
- Some gas well sites and customer sites require the use of a clip on traction device for work boots.
- Enclose your work space if possible.
- Stay moving. If you are standing still during your down time, you will likely start to get cold quicker. Do not stop moving around if possible, even if that is stretches, jumping jacks, or pacing.
- Have an extra set of clothes on deck. Having wet clothing can be a nightmare and lead to dangerous medical conditions such as hypothermia
In the car....
- Always check tires for proper inflation and check the tread to ensure it is adequate for winter driving
- Keep your gas tank at least half full. Freezing temperatures can freeze your gas tank overnight if there is not enough gas in the tank!
- If snow is covering your car, be sure to brush the snow off all windows, lights, and roof.
- Did you know that it is a state law in PA that if snow flies off your car and hits another person driving causing damage or a wreck, you can be held reliable?
- Check your windshield wiper fluid regularly. You may not realize it but you can go through a lot of fluid faster than you think
- It is best to use winter fluid mix
- Drive defensively. As the weather conditions get worse or as the amount of weight you are towing increases, it is best to increase the distance between the vehicle in front of you and your vehicle
Winter weather may be dangerous from time to time but with smart decision making and knowledge of simple safety practices, you can have a big impact on preventing a major accident on the road or on the job.
